Pain is a gift...and other notes from a terrified father

I feel like this is my new everyday. Never forget, THIS IS TERRIFYING, while staying calm, cool, and collected. And have all the answers.

Twin Reductions

This article provides a verrrrry interesting ethical situation of voluntary reduction of a pregnancy with twins down to a singleton. It makes me a little uncomfortable and brings up so many ethical issues; sex-selection, the right to choose, etc.

TEDtalk

Joan Halifax: Compassion and the true meaning of empathy

soooo inspiring.

“Compassion has enemies and those enemies are things like pity, moral, outrage, fear”

From therumpus.net . Beautifully written.

Seriously, there are so many amazing and moving perspectives that are going to influence my nursing practice.

Bevel UP. About the street nurses in Vancouver. Watched this in class today and it was so amazing and inspiring. I wonder if there could be something like this in the U.S

Really amazing. The most emotional 3-minute TED talk ever. Applications for nursing everywhere!

Unsolicited Advice for Bristol Palin: Call It Rape

If you’re going to be a role model, be a role model.

Amazing open letter from Jaclyn Friedman to Bristol Palin. Really, go read it.

Therapeutic Baking Days

The last week has really been a fiery hell hole, personally and globally, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up anytime in the immediate future.

Sometimes you just need to pull yourself out of bed, give what you can, and then start baking.

I’ve made cranberry orange muffins, two loaves of whole wheat bread, banana nut muffins, kidney bean burgers, and cashew pesto. Tomorrow, I think I will attempt some cinnamon raisin bread and French bread/baguette if I can find more yeast or yeast-free recipes, dhal, and maybe truffles.

Gobi Manchurian

From Vegan Planet.   I need to make this ASAP. yummmmm

Damn you, Dreams!

Last night I had a dream that I was at a wedding in the Southwest somewhere (hint hint southwesternly located lovelies) and I met a woman who was studying at a CPM school under Elizabeth Davis (of Heart & Hands, and Orgasmic Birth renown) and it was so inspiring to hear her speak about her studies and the environment of her school. I told her I was trying to decide between CPM and CNM routes and which was the best for me and the differences I wanted to make. Also, I kept rubbing jojoba oil into the my hands.

Despite the doubt created by this dream, when I was conscious again, I realized there is so much that I can do as an advocate on the Nursing side of the nursing-midwifery care and that is where I feel that I personally will be able to make a difference. (Please see earlier post of TED Talk with  Barry Schwartz.)

The last couple of weeks have been painful waiting for official decisions from other schools.  I feel like my decision about whether to attend Columbia is getting harder and harder. It has such a great reputation and I know it’s an honor to be invited to join their ranks. But it’s so phenomenally expensive (with little in the way of aid) and I don’t know if I should turn down my offer of acceptance and retry for other slightly less expensive schools next year.
